Environmental measures

Our activities focus mainly on the following areas:
  • Reducing carbon and other emissions around the globe that are generated by our vehicles, aircraft and systems
  • Reducing noise pollution caused by our aircraft and vehicles
  • Minimizing waste generated by our systems and enhanced recycling
  • Carbon-neutral shipping with the DHL Express GOGREEN service
  • Reducing energy consumption
  • Offsetting remaining emissions or emissions that cannot be reduced, for instance by investing in reafforestation programs or renewable energy projects

Specific examples

At the DHL air hub in Leipzig, 4'000 tons of carbon are saved annually compared with conventional systems by:
  • Generating electricity through solar cells covering 1'000 square meters of roof area
  • Meeting the hub's electricity, heating and cooling energy requirements by means of co-generation
  • Using rain water instead of 3'000 cubic meters of drinking water to clean aircraft

We intend to replace 90 percent of our air fleet by 2020. This will, for instance, involve buying modern cargo planes, such as the Boeing 757 Special Freighter (B757-SF). The B757-SF is 77 percent quieter and uses 20 percent less fuel per ton than its predecessor, the Boeing 727, thereby significantly reducing the level of carbon emissions. The aircraft also carries 6,000 kg more freight per flight than the B727, reducing the total transport costs.
