Fleet of gas-powered vehicles
DHL Express is continually expanding its fleet of gas-powered vehicles because depending on the gas used carbon emissions can be improved between 20 and 100 percent. The range is so wide because around one third of the fleet uses biogas, natural gas or petroleum gas, which each impact carbon emissions differently. DHL Express is already using 65 gas-powered vehicles (as of June 2009) in Switzerland for delivery and pick-up, which is equivalent to around a quarter of its fleet. In 2008, carbon emissions were reduced by 185 tons.
In order to further reduce carbon emissions, DHL Express is trying to prevent pollution at its source. The company’s experience with eco-drive training has been positive. In special training sessions, couriers learn defensive and eco-efficient driving techniques, thereby considerably reducing fuel consumption - by 15 percent since 2005. The ongoing optimization of loading factors, efficient route planning and combining shipments have all helped prevent unnecessary trips, make full use of loading capacities and minimize the climate effects of business activities.
